Chili Con Carne Recipe

Alright, I know I still do not have a sadza/isitshwala recipe on my blog, but I just had to share this recipe. I made this just yesterday, and it’s absolutely glorious! I promise I’ll post the isitshwala/sadza recipe soon, but for now let’s make some chili con carne! (If you’re vegetarian, you can replace the meat, and you’re allowed to call it chili sin carne 🙂 ).

Ingredients (total cost is about US$9)

30 ml (2 tbsp) olive oil
2 onions, chopped
2 garlic cloves
500g mince
5 ml (1 tsp) paprika
5 ml (1 tsp) cayenne pepper
30 ml (2 tbsp) tomato paste
250 ml (1 cup) beef stock
1 each red, green and yellow pepper, cut into cubes/squares
1 can (400g) red kidney beans, drained
1 can (400g) baked beans
Salt and pepper

Instructions

1. Fry onions and garlic in oil
2. Add mince and fry for 10 minutes
3. Add spices and paste, and stir-fry for 5 minutes
4. Stir in stock and simmer
5. Add the remaining ingredients and season

Serves about 8 people.

This recipe is highly customizable. I didn’t add any paprika because then it would be too hot for the kids (with that said, I think it was still too hot for the little kids). I also replaced beef stock with an instant beef soup mix, and olive oil with vegetable oil. And oh, I absolutely dislike anything garlic.
